NOMOS

The history of NOMOS

Nomos' minimal, utilitarian, and unobtrusive design style comes to mind when you think of the brand. What you might not realize is that the company's instantly identifiable style has an unusual past. Nomos is a relatively recent brand, having been created in 1990, little than a decade before the century. Despite this, the company's headquarters are in Glashütte, one of the most important cities in watchmaking history. Nomos is defined by its unique mix of modernism and history.

The brand's inception date and the location of its workshop have a significant impact on their approach to watchmaking. Nomos developed their brand just months following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. These pivotal occasions ushered in Germany's reunification and a revival in German design. Germany's design tendencies, such as the Bauhaus movement, characterized them throughout the globe in the early 1900s. After WWII, however, Germany's international reputation shifted. The reunification reignited interest in German design and the inventiveness of the German spirit, both of which are represented in the Nomos brand's success.

The arrival of Nomos in the Glashütte area signaled a period of progress and transformation. Since the mid-1800s, the globally renowned town has been making some of the most distinctive and high-quality timepieces. It is a tremendous honor to have the Glashütte origin appellation. This is due to the fact that watchmakers in this town are held to extremely high quality requirements. Only firms who manufacture at least 50% of the watch's caliber in Glashütte are eligible to call themselves real Glashütte watches. The foundation of a fresh new firm in an area with such high standards, pride, and a long history was an accomplishment in and of itself, one that exemplifies Nomos' progressive character and desire to create a new industry standard.

Since 2005, Nomos has not only met but also exceeded Glashütte's stringent quality standards. They now solely employ in-house made movements, which account for 95 percent of all movements in the region. The brand has been fortunate in attracting some of the world's most recognized watchmakers, many of whom are in their fifth generation of watchmaking. However, among Glashütte's older customs, they have a reputation for being a forward-thinking watchmaker. Nomos, once again, is a brand that flawlessly blends heritage and modernity.

Through its research and development division, Nomos' approach to watchmaking shows the significance of both tradition and progress. At first look, it may appear that watchmaking has remained relatively unchanged over the years. To some extent, this is correct. Many of the concepts used in contemporary watchmaking date back hundreds of years. Nomos, on the other hand, welcomes new technology and the benefits it brings. The company prides itself on being one of the world's best and most innovative watchmakers. They are adamant that effective tactics from the past will not suffice.

Nomos accomplishes its distinct modern design while retaining the craft of traditional watchmaking by combining talented artisans with the most cutting-edge production techniques. No matter what component is involved, the business believes in making each watch as exact as possible. Craftsmen are put to work if handcrafting is the most exact way. Machinery is utilized when technology allows for a more accurate solution. The question is straightforward: what will yield the greatest possible outcome? They are looking for the answer, whatever it is.
